Do cruise ships provide curling irons?

Cruise ships do not provide curling irons in cabins — but you can bring your own. Most major cruise lines permit personal curling irons and flat irons, with a few safety requirements you should know before you pack.

Can You Bring a Curling Iron on a Cruise?

Yes, on most lines. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Celebrity, and Princess all permit personal curling irons. The main requirement on many lines is that the device has an auto shut-off feature — a standard safety measure given the fire risk in enclosed cabin spaces. Check your specific cruise line's website before packing, as policies vary.

A few practical rules that apply on most ships:

  • Keep the iron away from ceiling-mounted heat detectors — they're sensitive and a triggered alarm means a visit from security
  • Never leave a curling iron unattended while hot
  • Unplug and allow to cool fully before storing
  • Damaged cords or non-auto-shutoff models may be confiscated at boarding

What to Pack

A compact, travel-friendly model is the right call. Look for:

  • Auto shut-off — required by many cruise lines and just good sense
  • Dual voltage (110V/220V) — essential if you're sailing on a European itinerary or international line; eliminates the need for a bulky converter
  • Compact or folding design — cabin space is limited

Conair and BaByliss both make solid travel models. Cabin outlets are limited — a cruise-approved, non-surge-protected power strip with USB ports helps manage multiple devices.

Flying to Your Port?

Pack your curling iron in your carry-on, not checked luggage — especially if it's cordless or battery-powered. The TSA allows corded curling irons in carry-ons but restricts butane-powered models entirely. Checked bag restrictions vary by airline, so carry-on is always the safer choice.

Onboard Salon as an Alternative

Every major cruise ship has an onboard salon with professional styling tools and staff. Salon services are ideal for formal nights or special occasions when you want a polished result without the effort. Book your appointment early after boarding — slots fill up fast on formal nights. Prices are comparable to land-based salons.

Tips for Humid Itineraries

Caribbean and tropical itineraries are tough on styled hair. A few things that help: anti-frizz serum, braids or updos for port days, and a curling iron with adjustable heat settings to redefine curls after exposure to salt air and humidity. For low-maintenance travelers, wrapping hair in a bun for port excursions and styling only for evenings is a practical approach.
