The unique town of Whittier, Alaska is located approximately 65 miles south of Anchorage. With a population of approximately 200 people, Whittier is situated overlooking Prince William Sound and has an industrial and military feel — due to its key role in Alaska's defense strategy during World War II.
🏢 Did you know?
The majority of Whittier's citizens live in what was once army barracks — the 14-storey Begich Towers. Due to wild winter weather, all town amenities including the Police Department, Medical Clinic, Post Office, grocery store, and laundromat are located inside the towers. There's even an underground tunnel leading to the school so students don't have to go outside in the cold!
Though small in size, there are various accommodations, restaurants, and activities for cruise passengers to enjoy — all within walking distance of the terminal. An ATM is located at the Harbor Store.
